The Religious Society of Friends has always felt that marriage is a commitment under God, such that they do not like to involve a justice of the peace or worship leader to complete a marriage. Marriage certificates were originally created to satisfy the political requirement confirming the banns and the approval and acceptance within the Quaker community for each marriage, thus providing acceptable evidence that any offspring are legitimate. These certificates are a snapshot in time, capturing the signatures of family and friends at one solemn and joyous moment. Contemporary marriage certificates often incorporate custom decoration to further personalize and enhance their commemorative piece. |
